Beautiful sunset views in Austin that's not Mt. Bonnel!
Welcome Y'all!
2020 has been unique and has challenged me in many ways and one being a full time working mom and deciding to keep my toddler home with us until it's safe. There is only so much toys and reading that Ke is able to do, for sure she is missing her friends, some ah ha moments learning several new things that would have been so organic vs us intentionally packing her days with fun and learning.
We have been exploring places that are less crowded, where social distancing is possible and where Ke can explore and get her ah-ha moments. As our next on list, we stopped by Balcones Canyon Lands National Wildlife Refuge by Marble Falls, TX.
The purpose of the refuge is to protect endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo. For sure, there is going to be some kind of wildlife sighting in this area. There is over 8 miles of hike offered and this is the spot you gotto be at for Texas sized sunsets. Depending on the trail you choose to hike, you could either experience the sunset and the Travis lake view from the sun deck or a pretty close-up view of the sunset and the city by hiking the limestone cliffs.
Ridgeline Trail: We parked and took a nice long walk by the Ridgeline trail to the sun deck. You can alternatively drive down this stretch as it is only 1.2 miles for the loop; make sure the tires are in good shape to get through this unpaved road. Past the sun deck, it's private property and not accessible. The trail itself has nature at it's undisturbed form and be prepared to come across coral snakes. Remember, yellow touches black, venomous? The ones here are venomous and step back slowly if you come across one.
Sun Deck: This had the most beautiful view of Lake Travis and Vista Knoll. Several elements of nature come together during sunset and makes it feel like you are on vacation in a far off land that is disconnected from bustling traffic and a 8-5 job. Just sitting down in a relaxing deck during these times of pandemic sure felt like a mental wellness session. I recommend this to be one of the instagrammable places near Austin.
Quarry Canyon Trail: This trail is less than a mile, a loop and is considered a difficult hike. We hiked here with a toddler and it seemed more towards the moderate side. The uniqueness of this trail is you hike through the skirts of the canyon with a full view of the limestone canyons, followed by trees and wildflower through the trails and when the loop forms there is the beautiful Texas-sized sunset with a wooden bench to admire the Travis lake and the city. I highly recommend hiking here during sunset!
Time: Be prepared to spend about 2 hours here if you choose to hike and take pictures.
Cost: The refuge trails are free of charge and is open all week from sunrise to sunset.
You may spot: Black Crested Timouse, Ringtails, Central Texas Ketydid, Texas Redoak, Juniper Hairstreak, Carolina Chickadee, Texas Alligator lizard, Coral Snake, fox and plenty of wildflowers.
Nearby Food Stop: 85C Bakery and Cafe for bobba tea and sugary pasteries. If you are up for an healthy alternative, try Leyla's Mediterranean as they have Meat, Veggie and Vegan options! Their vegan gyro was my favorite.
