Abilene, here we come!
Welcome Y'all!
West Texas has a special place in my heart for it's landscape and geography. I did an pretty extensive roadtrip to West Texas covering most of the cities in 2014. If you are familiar with Texas on the map, you must be familiar depending on where you live, it can take upto a day to get to the other side of the State. This time around, I planned for just a weekend trip to Abilene, TX because I am not yet ready to have the kiddo be on road all day.
So, the itinerary looked like overnight stay at Abilene State Park and the next day to include hiking and a visit to the Zoo. Btw, the zoo here is pretty impressive and we wanted to visit again this time for obvious reasons.
Soaking up some sunshine before the hike |
Abilene State Park
Abilene State Park is at the lower range of hills called Callahan Divide in NW Texas. We rented a screened shelter and didn't quiet want to camp as it was getting cooler by early November. The sounds of nature during quiet hours in these parks is something I look forward to. This time around, it was not just owls hooting, there were a pack of foxes howling literally for a few hours. I did not regret renting a brick and motor space. But, hey, this is part of being with nature and I am cool as long as I am prepared and can anticipate to a decent extend.
Screened Shelter and the golden vibes |
Do you know the Abilene State Park is one of the dark sky zones? The night sky was pretty lit and stargazing was fun. I was all thrilled to get these memories captured but showed up there without the SD card and just the cam. So, heads up, the pictures here are from my mobile.
Early morning hikes in crisp air during fall is my favorite. I woke up to beautiful fall colors and making feel like living in a paradise. From yellows to bright red, and quiet a bit of sunshine, this was the perfect fall weekend gateway.
Elm Creek Nature Trail
Right about a mile hike, Elm Creek showed off beautiful orange-red hues with yellow fall foliage throughout the trail. It was a super easy hike early in the morning with the birds chipping making it the best start for the day. The trail takes you through the Buffalo Wallow which is the fishing area here. Pretty neat with sights of densely spread prairie grass. Throughout this trail, there were several spots with instagrammable views.
Abilene Zoo
This one's my favorite. Be it feeding the Giraffes, riding on the Safari Train, feeding the fishes, a visit here would certainly be memorable. They have discounts most of the times. Follow this link to review ahead of your visit https://www.abilenevisitors.com/Coupons
COVID Note: At the time of visit, this place was way crowded leaving people in proximity and not everyone wore a mask. Please make the best decision for you and yours.
Have you visited any of these places before? Share your experience in the comments below, would love to hear from you!
Cheers,
